日本では、昭和３２年以降国内での狂犬病の発生はなく、世界的にも珍しい国の一つですが、全世界では多くの国で狂犬病が流行し、年間４～５万人もの人が狂犬病で亡くなっています。
米国では、毎年数名が狂犬病で命を落とし、この３月３０日にも米国カリフォルニア州の２８歳男性が狂犬病と診断され、発症後の死亡は免れないとの報告があります（AP通信）。４月８日にはアリゾナ州のペットショップで、狂犬病に罹患した４ヶ月齢のオーストラリアシェパードが見つかっています（ProMed情報）。ロシアでも、狂犬病のキツネに今年２５名が咬まれ、昨年は狂犬病のキツネに咬まれた２２名の内、１５名が死亡しました（BBC国際報道）。１９９９年には、韓国で５１歳の男性が狂犬病のイヌにかまれて数ヶ月後に発症して死亡し、話題になったことをご記憶の方も多いと思います。
日本は島国であり、狂犬病予防接種が普及しているので大丈夫と、安易な考えからその危険性を認識していない人が非常に多いといわれています。昭和３２年（１９５７年）以降、国内で発生がないということは、昭和３２年生まれの大人の年齢は満45歳に当たるわけですから、自分自身が認識していない上、子供に狂犬病の恐さを教えられないのも無理のないことかもしれません。
ですが、海外では非常に問題視されていながら日本には入ってこないとされていたBSE（牛海綿状脳症、いわゆる狂牛病）が２００１年９月に日本で発生しました。これは、国の対応が後手に回ったためですが、その後のわれわれ国民の反応も異常とさえいえるものでした。１頭のBSE牛が確認されただけで、パニック状態ともいえる様々な社会現象が生じました。だから、ペットポータルは本気で心配します、「狂犬病がもし日本で再発したら・・・」と。

しかし、BSE発生後に行われている一連の巨額を講じた国の対策（食用にと殺される牛の全頭検査、検査実施前の牛肉の買取り、使用禁止となった肉骨粉の廃棄処分など）や、マスコミのヒステリー状態、日本国内での消費者の反応（牛肉の買い控え、焼肉屋の倒産、豚肉・魚肉へのシフトなど）を考えると、狂犬病が発生した後の経済的損失や社会的混乱などは容易に予想できるではありませんか。
数年前、BSE問題が発生したときに、ペットポータルではBSEの発生に過剰反応は禁物（牛肉編）」と訴えてきました。 狂犬病が再発する危険性はゼロではないわけですから、もし再発することが不幸にしてあったとしても、冷静に対処することが最も重要です。
